Questions

Ear wax removal FAQs

Does microsuction hurt?

It isn't usually painful. Most people describe a slightly noisy, comfortable few minutes. Your audiologist explains each step as they go, and works under an ENT microscope so they can see the whole ear canal clearly. If your wax is hard, we gently loosen it first.

Do I need to use oil or drops first?

Usually not. With microsuction, most people don't need drops beforehand. If you think your wax is hard or impacted, a little olive oil spray, such as Earol, 1 or 2 days before can help. Please avoid drops that "dissolve" wax, such as Otex. They tend to spread it around the ear canal, which makes it harder to remove.

How long does it take?

Adult appointments are 30 minutes. That covers a chat about your ears, a look inside them on screen, the wax removal itself and aftercare advice. Children's appointments are 45 minutes, so nobody is rushed.

What if my wax is very hard or impacted?

We use fine tools, such as a Jobson Horne probe or an ear hook, to loosen hard wax from the ear canal wall so microsuction can lift it out. Most wax comes out in one visit. If it's deep or impacted and a second visit is needed, the follow-up costs £35.

Is it suitable if I've had a perforated eardrum, grommets or ear surgery?

Please call us before booking if you've had a perforated eardrum, grommets or any ear surgery. Michael will talk it through with you and advise whether microsuction is right for you.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us online or by phone. You don't need a referral or a letter from your GP, and there's no waiting list to join.

Can you remove wax for children?

Yes, from age 3. Children's appointments are with a Specialist Paediatric Audiologist, assisted by a second audiologist, in a calm, child-friendly room. They take 45 minutes and cost £89 for both ears. Children over 12 can book a standard adult appointment.

What's the difference between microsuction and syringing?

Syringing, or irrigation, flushes the ear with water. Microsuction uses a small suction tube to lift wax out while the audiologist watches through a microscope. We use microsuction for everyone, and only occasionally add a few seconds of irrigation for sticky or wet wax.

How soon can I be seen?
